New York, NY, July 11, 2008 ... The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today marked the anniversary of the Second Lebanon War, which broke out July 12, 2006.  The war was provoked when Hezbollah entered Israeli territory and attacked a group of Israeli soldiers patrolling the border, killing eight soldiers and kidnapping two.

ADL issued the following statement:

We remember the victims of the 2006 Lebanon War and the two soldiers, Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, whose families and friends still await their return from Hezbollah captivity.   We remember the 157 Israelis killed during the conflict: the IDF soldiers killed in battle, and those killed by Hezbollah rockets which rained down on northern Israel.  We also remember the thousands of people who were wounded and displaced from their homes by Hezbollah rocket fire.

It is a sad reality that two years later Hezbollah remains a threat to Israel  in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 which led to the cessation of hostilities.  In this period, Hezbollah has deepened its dangerous influence over the Lebanese government and, with the assistance of Syria and Iran, has engaged in a serious effort to rearm.  It is the responsibility of the international community and the Security Council to hold Hezbollah and Lebanon accountable for these violations and to undertake measures to bring about their compliance with U.N. resolutions.
