ADL Welcomes the Arrest of Radovan Karadzic for Genocide

New York, NY, July 22, 2008 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed the arrest by Serbian officials of Radovan Karadzic, indicted for genocide and other war crimes, including the 1995 Srebrenica massacre of 8,000 Bosnian Muslims.

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

Radovan Karadzic led the ethnic cleansing campaign against Bosnian Muslims and Croats, together with former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic.  His arrest after 12 years of hiding sends an important message to other war criminals who engage in acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing that they too will be hunted and eventually brought to justice.

We hope the families of the many victims of his heinous crimes can take some comfort in knowing that Karadzic will be held accountable. We congratulate Serbian President Boris Tadic and his government for tracking down Karadzic and holding him to account for his unspeakable crimes.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
