ADL, CJP Condemn Vandalism of Menorah at Northeastern University

November 30, 2012 ... The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP) today condemned an act of vandalism which occurred early Friday morning on a menorah at Northeastern University in Boston, MA.

Following a statement by Northeastern President Joseph E. Aoun and an investigation of the Northeastern Police Department, two Northeastern students reportedly have accepted responsibility for vandalizing the Menorah.  These students have been referred to the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution (OSCCR) for disciplinary action.

ADL and CJP today praised President Aoun for releasing a letter to the broad-based Northeastern University community which condemned the "hateful act… [that] has no place in our community," and for making the investigation a top priority.

"We commend President Aoun and Northeastern Police for responding swiftly and effectively to this disturbing act of vandalism," said ADL New England Regional Director Derrek L. Shulman and CJP President Barry Shrage in a joint statement.  "An act of this nature is hurtful not only to Jewish people, but also to all those who value a shared community of respect."

"This latest incident of vandalism is a matter of very grave concern not merely to the Jewish community, but to all who are concerned about the apparent increase in hate speech of this sort, including at area colleges and universities," said ADL Board Chair Jeff Robbins. "We are troubled by the number of examples of despicable incidents have taken place throughout New England in recent months."

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
