Israel Election Results Show A ‘Rejection of Extremes’

New York, NY, January 23, 2013 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today reacted to the final results of Israel’s national election, saying that it was a reaffirmation of Israel’s vibrant democratic electoral process and represented a “rejection of extremes.”

Barry Curtiss-Lusher, ADL National Chair, and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director issued the following statement:

The high turnout and the unexpected results show that the Israeli democratic process remains robust and unpredictable.

There is clear support for Benjamin Netanyahu, whose Likud-Beiteinu Party won the largest plurality of seats, to remain as Prime Minister.  At the same time, the electorate is communicating to him that they want him to lead, but not with a coalition dominated by extremists.

Despite prognosticators and critics, Israel did not make a shift to the political far right.  Rather, the electorate rejected extremes: extremes in areas of religion, and extremes in domestic and foreign policy.  Instead, a majority of Israelis showed their commitment to the political center –from center right to center left.

The people of Israel have exercised their rights and voted in national elections, selecting their parliamentary representation for the next four years.  In a region where the voting process is often marred by corruption and violence, Israel, which has conducted free and orderly elections since its founding, stands proudly as a symbol of an open and vibrant democracy.  We congratulate the people of Israel on successful elections, and wish the heads of the political parties fortitude and success in forming a government.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
