ADL Urges Polish Government to Resolve Legal Uncertainty Over Ritual Slaughter

New York, NY, November 28, 2012 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) expressed concern about a ruling by Poland’s Constitutional Court that created legal uncertainty for the practice of ritual slaughter.

“While the case before the court involved a question of the relative powers of the parliament and the government and not the legality of ritual slaughter itself, we are concerned that a situation of legal uncertainty has been created, which may in the near future threaten the ability for Jewish ritual slaughter to be conducted in Poland,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.  “Since Jewish ritual slaughter is a major component of Jewish religious dietary laws, we believe the ability to conduct ritual slaughter constitutes a fundamental religious practice, which should not be unduly restricted.”

In a letter to the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Mr. Foxman urged that “an appropriate solution be found to permit Jewish ritual slaughter to be practiced in Poland” and expressed confidence that the Polish government will do so.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
