Binghamton University
2025 Report Card
SUNY Binghamton has a Hillel, a Chabad, Jewish Greek life organizations and a Center for Israel Studies (CIS).
Litigation & Investigations
In January 2024, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights opened a Title VI investigation into Binghamton following allegations that the University had failed to adequately respond to discrimination and threats made against its Jewish students.
What’s Happening on Campus?
A number of incidents have been reported since October 7, including antisemitic and anti-Zionist rhetoric at anti-Israel rallies on campus. In November 2023, a classroom reserved for an event hosted by Binghamton's Zionist Organization was reportedly covered in anti-Israel posters. At a “Walk out for Palestine” event organized by Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), one student speaker declared that, “If Hamas is worse than ISIS, Israel is worse than Nazi Germany.”
In April 2024, the Binghamton University Student Government passed a BDS resolution. The resolution was rescinded in October 2024 and, in January 2025, the Student Government posted a statement condemning divestment from Israel.
University Policies and Responsive Action
The University meets with representatives of the Binghamton Hillel and Chabad on a weekly basis, focusing these discussions on providing support to the University’s Jewish students. University leadership also co-organizes Chabad’s annual Hanukkah party and has provided funding for and attended Jewish events on campus.
On a monthly basis, members of the administration also meet with representatives of a number of Jewish student organizations.
In addition, all faculty and staff members are required to complete mandatory Title VI, harassment and non-discrimination training modules and, effective 2025, all student employees are required to take the same trainings. Such trainings are also mandatory for some students – including student organization leaders. These trainings contain explicit discussions of antisemitism and leverage the IHRA definition of antisemitism.
Binghamton also launched its Civil Dialogue Project (CDP) in August 2023 as a pilot program and scaled the program in July 2024.
