In December 2024, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights entered into a resolution agreement with Temple, outlining a series of actions that the university must take to address antisemitism on campus.
What’s Happening on Campus?
In June 2024, it was announced that a number of Temple students were facing charges for participating in a University of Pennsylvania encampment protest.
In July 2024, an off-campus home in which members of the Jewish fraternity AEPi reside experienced an intruder who opened the roof hatch and made a crude gesture. This followed earlier incidents of trespass and vandalism reported at the property in May 2024.
In August 2024, a group of Temple students and non-Temple individuals protested in front of the campus Hillel, chanting at those within the building.
In September 2024, student and non-student protesters disrupted a career fair using a bullhorn, resulting in some arrests. In October 2024, anti-Israel leaflets were distributed on campus. In November 2024, an off-campus home in which members of a Jewish fraternity reside was vandalized with graffiti that read "Israel [equals] genocide."
University Policies and Responsive Action
Temple University received the 2022 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award, which highlights its dedication to fostering an inclusive environment. The presence of the Interfaith Inclusion Center underscores the university's support for diverse religious identities.
In 2022, the University established the Blue Ribbon Commission on Antisemitism and University Responses, which has made a number of recommendations that the University has implemented, including the appointment of a Special Advisor on Antisemitism.
Following the May and July 2024 incidents at AEPi, the university condemned the actions and launched an investigation. Additionally, Temple addressed the September 2024 protest disruption by outlining conduct violations and potential consequences, reinforcing its policies on acceptable behavior.
