University of Notre Dame
2025 Report Card
While Notre Dame was founded and continues to operate as a Catholic university, there are some Jewish students in the undergraduate population. There is no Hillel or Chabad but the Jewish student club has doubled in size over the past few years and hosts bi-weekly Shabbat celebrations and an Antisemitism Awareness Week, and has a voice in the campus’ interfaith dialogues. The South Bend Jewish Federation is also involved on campus.
The University additionally invests in opportunities for Jewish and Israel-related studies.
What’s Happening on Campus?
At least two protests held since October 7, 2023 featured antisemitic rhetoric, including a sign that read, “one Holocaust does not justify another.”
University Policies and Responsive Action
Since October 7, Notre Dame has issued statements of condemnation of Hamas and antisemitism. University President Father John Jenkins was a founding signatory of the Yeshiva University statement of support of Israel and the Palestinians who suffer under Hamas.
In May 2024, 17 anti-Israel protestors were arrested at the University and attempts at establishing an encampment were thwarted by campus police.
The University has also recently held a number of educational sessions, including “Antisemitism and Other Hates,” “Safety through Solidarity: The Fight Against Antisemitism,” “One Year After October 7: Historical Backdrop and Future Prospects,” and “Beyond 'Eternal Hatred': Reconsidering the Nature of Antisemitism.” The University launched an Israel-Palestine discussion series for the 2024-25 academic year.
