Yale University has a Hillel called the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life, Chabad, and Jewish Greek life organizations.

Litigation & Investigations

In January 2024, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights opened a Title VI investigation into Yale following a complaint alleging that two Jewish students were barred from attending a panel called “Gaza Under Siege” because they are Jewish.

What’s Happening on Campus?

The campus has witnessed a series of incidents and has experienced consistent pro-BDS action. Recent incidents have included a non-Jewish student being named on a flier distributed off campus that read “Jews like [Name of Student] continue to spew their anti-White hatred toward Whites and insists Whites feel guilty for slavery.”

There have been anti-Israel rallies featuring anti-Zionist rhetoric.

The Yale Women’s Center (YWC) intended to host a 3-day conference in April 2024 titled “Pinkwashing and Feminism(s) in Palestine” featuring multiple speakers known for antisemitic rhetoric. The YWC ultimately canceled this event.

In April 2024, at an anti-Israel rally organized by Jewish Voice for Peace and Students for Justice in Palestine, protesters chanted, “Free our prisoners, free them all, Zionism must-fall.” Protesters also displayed signs with images of Walid Daqqa, a leader of the antisemitic U.S.-designated terror group Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

In September 2024, a visibly Jewish student was blocked from entering part of the Yale University campus by anti-Israel protestors. At a protest in October 2024, a protester displayed a sign that depicted Biden breastfeeding Netanyahu, who is wearing a Star of David onesie, with blood coming from dollar signs.

In December 2024, Facebook users left antisemitic comments on a Hanukkah post from the Yale Gymnastics team.

University Policies and Responsive Action

Building on work completed by the Yale Antisemitism Campus Climate Group, Yale implemented a standing committee to “amplify the recommendations ... and continue to identify and address issues related to campus climate for the Jewish student community.”

In addition, Yale announced it would fully fund the security costs for the Slifka Center and will provide funding to further support provision of kosher meals.

In March 2024, a group of 25 members of the Yale faculty visited Israel to foster connections between the University and Israeli academics.

In April 2024, Yale police arrested 47 protestors for trespassing during an anti-Israel demonstration. That same month, two days after an anti-Israel encampment was set up, Yale and New Haven police cleared the encampment. No arrests were made as all protestors disbanded after being asked to leave.

In advance of the 2024-25 academic year, the University launched a data dashboard to provide data on reported incidents of protected class discrimination and harassment and, following the refinement of protest-related policies, consolidated on one webpage all content related to free expression and peaceable assembly.

In August 2024, the administration reminded the campus community that the University will respond when free expression crosses the line to discrimination and harassment and offered resources for support and reporting.

Additionally, educational content on antisemitism was built into new student and faculty orientation and is included in the trainings for free expression facilitators who support public events, Yale Public Safety officers, Discrimination and Harassment Resource Coordinators and staff in the Office of Institutional Equity and Accessibility. The University also organized a faculty-led panel discussion on antisemitism and Islamophobia/anti-Arab racism and has committed to offering new online resources related to antisemitism.
