The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has a student-run Hillel and a Chabad.

What’s Happening on Campus?

Since October 7 2023, there have been antisemitic social media posts and messages on campus listservs, including language celebrating the killing of Jews.

University Policies and Responsive Action

University President Thomas Felix Rosenbaum spoke out against Hamas’ attack on Israel and against hate speech on social media and in emails directly sent to members of the Caltech community. In a follow-up statement, the University announced that the Graduate Student Council committed to creating clearer policies on the moderation of campus-controlled channels. President Rosenbaum also advocated for more programs fostering dialogue, including “Disrupting Antisemitism” and “Disrupting Islamophobia” programs sponsored by the Caltech Center for Inclusion and Diversity in November 2023.

Caltech’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Action Planning Group is currently developing recommendations to better promote an inclusive campus climate, free from all forms of hate including antisemitism.

Caltech’s Center for Inclusion and Diversity (CCID) provides voluntary antisemitism education as a part of its Unpacking Hate series, digital education campaigns, as well as stand-alone workshops in recognition of Holocaust Remembrance Day and Jewish American Heritage Month.

In October 2024, Caltech kicked off its Dialogue across Difference series, which is intended to build campus community members’ capacity to engage in civil discourse on difficult topics.
