What’s Happening on Campus?
There was a series of antisemitic incidents in the fall of 2022, including several swastikas found on campus.
A swastika was found drawn into the snow in December 2023 during Hanukkah, as well as three other swastika incidents in the fall of 2023.
University Policies and Responsive Action
Ithaca College participated in Hillel’s Campus Climate Initiative in the 2021-2022 school year.
Following the 2022 incidents, Ithaca convened a Task Force on Antisemitism and Hate Symbols and hosted a series of events including a half-day event entitled, “Historical and Contemporary Manifestations of Antisemitism and their Impact.”
Following October 7, the University released a statement of solidarity for the community. Given the overlaps of the Ithaca College and Cornell University communities, Ithaca College has also been responsive when incidents have occurred at Cornell, including threats made to the Cornell Jewish community.
All incoming students are required to participate in an Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging training that includes the campus-wide stance against antisemitism and other expressions of hate.
In October 2024, the week surrounding the anniversary of the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel was dedicated to holding space and supporting those grieving through silent vigils, affinity spaces and interfaith prayer services. The College has also engaged an external storytelling and community building group to train members of the campus community through a community building process.
In the 2024-25 academic year, the College and the campus Hillel are planning to bring more Jewish culture onto the campus through music, food, films, and more. An interfaith student club is also being formed on campus as a joint effort between Jewish and Muslim student leaders.
