Northeastern University has a Hillel, Chabad and a Jewish Affinity Group for faculty and staff.

What’s Happening on Campus?

Since October 7, student groups, including Northeastern’s Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter, have held sit-ins, rallies and walkouts on campus. Huskies for a Free Palestine, a campus group that is unaffiliated with the University, has organized die-ins and called on the University to sever its ties with corporations that do business with the Israeli military.

In November 2023, a Northeastern student posted the pictures and full names of two Jewish students on Instagram, accusing them of supporting “the mass killing of innocent children” and encouraging other students to “shame them when you see them on campus.” In December 2023, Jewish students attempting to attend a Shabbat dinner at the University encountered a group of anti-Israel protesters calling for “Global Intifada.”

In November 2024, "Zionist Scum" was written on the outside of a student's apartment, which was displaying an Israeli flag.

University Policies and Responsive Action

The University has taken disciplinary action against a number of the students affiliated with Huskies for a Free Palestine for violating the Student Code of Conduct. Northeastern President Joseph Aoun issued a statement condemning Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attack. In November 2023, a 150-member Jewish Affinity Group was established. The University provides funding to the group, and senior leadership holds regular meetings with its representatives

After an anti-Israel rally in December 2023 where chants of “From the river to the sea” and “Intifada, revolution” could be heard, more than 130 faculty and staff signed a letter condemning the antisemitism at the demonstration.

The University added an FAQ section to its website entitled “Safe Campuses, Civil Discourse: Frequently Asked Questions,” including the University’s hate speech policy and the University’s rejection of calls to divest from corporations doing business with the Israeli military.

Following the establishment of an encampment by anti-Israel protestors, campus and state police arrested 100 protestors and dismantled the encampment.

In advance of the 2024-25 academic year, the University launched a new voluntary Antisemitism 101 training for staff and faculty members. The University has also formed a standing group of senior leaders who meet regularly to discuss issues of antisemitism on campus and to develop preventative measures.

In addition, with support from the administration, the campus Hillel has created a ‘campus antisemitism peer educators (CAPE)’ group of students trained and engaged on addressing antisemitism on campus.
