Litigation & Investigations
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights opened a Title VI investigation in January 2024. In April 2024, ADL, the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, and StandWithUs filed a Title VI complaint alleging that the University failed to meaningfully address a long list of incidents affecting Jewish and Israeli students, including verbal taunts and threats and physical assault.
What’s Happening on Campus?
There have been a number of concerning antisemitic incidents on Ohio State’s campus, particularly in the wake of the October 7 terrorist attack. Recent incidents have included two Jewish students being physically and verbally assaulted in November 2023 and a student being spat on during a fundraising event for Israel in October 2023. In December 2023, individuals shouted antisemitic phrases and threw objects at a Jewish fraternity, and a flier advertising an event hosted by Central Ohio Revolutionary Socialists, a student group on campus, stated, "Intifada, Revolution, and a path to a Free Palestine" alongside an image of an individual holding a gun. Also in December 2023, a street sign was reportedly vandalized with “From the river to the sea...Palestine will be free,” and two women were arrested and charged after allegedly vandalizing the Ohio State University Hillel and shouting antisemitic threats.
In October 2024, at an anti-Israel rally celebrating the anniversary of Hamas’ October 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel, protesters chanted, “Zionism: Shut it down.”
University Policies and Responsive Action
The University has adopted the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism, consistent with a 2022 executive order issued by the state’s governor.
The University is launching a task force focused on combating antisemitism, Islamophobia, anti-Christian discrimination and hatred, harassment, bullying or violence towards others on the basis of religious identity.
The University has also reported that, ahead of the 2024-25 academic year, it has engaged in communication efforts to ensure the university community is aware of campus support services, policies and educational resources. According to the administration, to prioritize safety, the University has leveraged both university police and the Campus Activism and Event Engagement Team on-site for student demonstrations and events.
