What’s Happening on Campus?

In December 2023, a swastika was drawn on the wall of the Holocaust Museum bathroom and, in November 2023, antisemitic messages were reportedly sent to Jewish students. In October 2023, one student disrupted a Hillel event with yelling. Also in October 2023, a student received harassing phone calls and text messages that stated: "From the river to the sea." In March 2023, a swastika was etched into the wall of an elevator on the campus.

University Policies and Responsive Action

SUNY Rockland organized a series of educational Israel-related events for the 2024 Summer term.

In advance of the 2024-25 academic year, SUNY Rockland added the IHRA definition of antisemitism into its Code of Conduct, alongside a definition of Islamophobia. The University’s Steps Beyond Statements working group has also now established a new subcommittee called the Task Force on Antisemitism and Islamophobia.

In addition, all college employees are required to complete training which focuses on recognizing and preventing discrimination under Title VI, Title VII, and Title IX and an additional antisemitism workshop was offered in August 2024.

The College has also created an Inclusive Excellence Plan emphasizing SUNY Rockland’s commitment to take actionable steps to creating and sustaining a diverse and equitable academic environment for all.

In October 2024, on the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attacks on Israel, in collaboration with the Hillel Club and the Holocaust Museum on campus, a memorial program was hosted by the University.
