What’s Happening on Campus?

There were several incidents of antisemitic graffiti predating October 7, 2023, including a Jewish professor's door being vandalized with a swastika and the phrase, "We are everywhere.”

Jewish students were harassed at an October 2023 vigil for Israelis killed during Hamas' attack. In November 2023, a Jewish fraternity on campus was vandalized with the phrase, "F*** AEPi.”

In May 2024, a student at the University was arrested and charged with a hate crime for allegedly vandalizing a Holocaust memorial and going on an “antisemitic tirade."

In October 2024, a swastika was drawn on the whiteboard of a Jewish student's dorm room.

University Policies and Responsive Action

President Assanis issued a statement condemning the Hamas terrorist attack on October 10, which was deemed by many to be inadequate, prompting an improved statement that was released the following day.

The University’s Antisemitism and Jewish Experience Committee (AJEC) seeks to strengthen the University’s diversity and inclusion mission for Jewish members of the campus community. Alongside the committee, the Jewish Heritage Caucus serves as one of 11 faculty and staff affinity groups on campus. The University also works closely with the campus Hillel and Chabad, as well as external Jewish organizations.

In Summer 2024, the University of Delaware sent several staff members to Brandeis University to attend the Summer Institute for Countering Antisemitism in Higher Education. As a result of this initiative, an antisemitism education workshop has been developed for the campus community, with plans to pilot the workshop with select faculty and staff during Spring 2025, and to then make the workshop available to all members of the campus community.

In addition, the University has organized several initiatives to promote civil discourse on campus, including open listening sessions for students to discuss their feelings in light of the Israel-Hamas war, sessions on the rise of global antisemitism in the aftermath of the Hamas attack on Israel, and a series of “A Jew, A Muslim, and a Cup of Java” meetings to discuss topics related to religion, culture, and connectivity.
