2025 Report Card
George Mason University (GMU) has a Hillel, Chabad and Jewish Greek life on campus.
Litigation & Investigations
Since December 2023, the university has faced a federal investigation over multiple incidents of antisemitism, casting a spotlight on its campus climate.
What’s Happening on Campus?
In October 2023, SJP announced a rally at GMU, openly supporting Hamas and calling for actions against Israel, while encouraging protestors to bring face coverings to conceal their identities.
In November 2023, a violent incident was reported where a GMU alumnus assaulted a current Jewish student during a fraternity gathering, shouting antisemitic slurs and tearing off a Star of David necklace.
The GMU Student Senate in April 2024 passed a resolution calling for boycotts and divestment from Israel.
By May 2024, faculty and staff released a statement supporting an anti-Zionist encampment.
In November 2024, law enforcement found weapons and terrorist paraphernalia in the homes of two GMU students and SJP leaders.
In December 2024, a GMU student was arrested for allegedly plotting an attack on the Israeli consulate in New York.
University Policies and Responsive Action
In response to these challenges, President Washington has instructed the George Mason University Police Department to offer its services to Hillel free-of-charge to ensure Jewish events are not disrupted. Mason PD also offers Jewish students the ability to be escorted if they feel unsafe. In addition, President Washington has held Jewish community town halls, invited Jewish students to his house for dinner, and engaged with the Jewish community to learn more about how the campus climate is impacting their experiences on campus.
GMU has also worked with external partners to host a training on antisemitism for University Life Staff and will be participating in Hillel International’s 2025 Campus Climate Initiative.
In December 2024, the university took decisive action by suspending SJP for violations of campus policies.
George Mason is currently in the process of establishing a working group to address antisemitism and bias and discrimination on the basis of protected categories.
Notably, GMU faculty have contributed to broader education efforts. In October 2024, professors launched a podcast to explore antisemitism in the U.S., aiming to deepen understanding and educate listeners on this critical issue. Additionally, GMU professor Dr. Charles Chavis Jr. was honored for his civil rights work at ADL's Concert Against Hate.
