As 2016 draws to a close, the Anti-Defamation League is counting down the major milestones we accomplished this year in the fight against hate. Here’s a look at some highlights from our education division:
Demand for ADL’s education programs and curriculum increased substantially in 2016, as educators, families and community leaders sought ways to help young people feel safe and make sense of troubling current events, from the shooting at The Pulse nightclub to the largest refugee crisis since WWII to the vitriolic presidential campaign and a post-election spike in hate crimes and cyberhate.
As the impact numbers below reflect, ADL’s education professionals worked tirelessly to meet this increased need for anti-bias training and resources.
- ADL partnered with more than 1,700 schools, impacting 1.7 million students and educators, to actively challenge bias and bullying through ADL’s No Place for Hate™ initiative, which helps to create and sustain inclusive schools where all students feel valued and have the opportunity to succeed by promoting respect for individual differences while challenging bigotry and prejudice.
- ADL reached over 33,000 middle and high school youth and educators through its bullying and cyberbullying prevention programs, providing participants with tools to address identity-based bullying behavior in their schools and online.
- ADL led anti-bias programs for more than 26,000 students, educators and other adults, providing them with knowledge and skills to address bias in their communities through A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute’s anti-bias training programs. These participants directly impacted thousands more in their communities.
- In 2016, total of more than 8,500 educators engaged with Echoes and Reflections offerings, with 6,000 teachers representing more than 2,000 schools, participating in professional development programs across the United States and online.
- ADL’s Words to Action program impacted over 6,000 college and pre-college students, empowering and equipping them with skills to combat anti-Semitism and anti-Israel bias on campus and in their communities.
ADL Education also developed essential online educational resources to support and educate people on important trends and topics:
