New York, NY, December 10, 2020 … ADL (the Anti-Defamation League) applauded the Kingdom of Morocco's historic decision today agreeing to fully normalize relations with the State of Israel. This agreement is especially significant given the longstanding heritage of the Jewish community in Morocco, including an important community there today and hundreds of thousands of Jews around the world with Moroccan family roots, especially in Israel.
"I commend Moroccan, Israeli, and American leaders for reaching this historic milestone," said Jonathan A. Greenblatt, ADL CEO and National Director. "Just two days ago I had the pleasure to write to the King of Morocco commending him for the inclusion of positive educational materials in the Kingdom's latest public school curriculum regarding the significance of the Moroccan Jewish community. I look forward to this accord fostering warm societal engagements between Moroccans and Israelis, in addition to productive ties between their governments."
Carole Nuriel, Director of ADL’s Israel Office, added: “As a descendant of Moroccan Jews – both my parents were born and raised in Rabat – I’m personally moved by this historic step. Having grown up on stories of close relationships between Jews and Muslims in Morocco, I believe the establishment of diplomatic relationships between Israel and Morocco will be a continuation of this positive heritage.”
