New York, NY, February 15, 2018 … The Anti-Defamation League expressed deep concern and profound sadness over the school shooting Wednesday in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen individuals, including many students, were killed when a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The gunman, identified as Nikolas Cruz, has been taken into custody and charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder.
Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO, issued the following statement:
Seventeen people went to school yesterday in Parkland, Florida to learn, educate, and work. They never came home and instead their families are left heartbroken and destroyed, planning funerals, because of yet another school shooting.
We demand that our elected leaders come up with strategies to deal with this epidemic of gun violence plaguing our country. It is outrageous in a country such as ours that teachers and kids can’t go to school without fear of being shot.
ADL has long been an advocate for strong, effective and sensible gun violence prevention measures. Since 1967, ADL has favored expanded federal and state regulation of the sale and transfer of firearms and other dangerous weapons – including assault weapons. Our research indicates that firearms remain the most common weapon of choice for extremists committing deadly acts in 2017. Along with coalition partners, we will continue to push for responsible gun safety and violence prevention laws and regulations at the federal, state, and local levels to combat this epidemic of gun bloodshed. We owe it to the families and friends of those killed and wounded and everyone who has been personally affected by this and countless other tragedies.
