ADL providing expert analysis in what may be the third deadliest act of violence by a domestic extremist in over 50 years
New York, August 4, 2019 … ADL expressed deep sadness following the mass shooting in El Paso, Texas on Saturday, which left 20 dead and more than two dozen injured, in what police are investigating as a possible hate crime.
“Yet again we turn our thoughts and prayers to a community grieving after another mass shooting potentially motivated by hate and extremism. But thoughts and prayers are simply not enough,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO. “We have documented a rise in extremist activity, both online and in our communities. As with too many of these incidents, our experts have again been reviewing the apparent manifesto of an alleged shooter, as well as other elements of his online footprint, to evaluate potential extremist ties, and we have also reached out to law enforcement to provide expert analysis and support.”
If the suspect is the author of the manifesto, this latest act of domestic terrorism will be, according to the ADL’s Center on Extremism’s records, the third deadliest act of violence by a domestic extremist in over 50 years and the second deadliest act of violence by a right-wing extremist in the same span, second only to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.
ADL experts are also monitoring the mass shooting overnight in Dayton; at this time, there are no apparent ties to extremism.
