ADL Statement on Sentencing of Derek Chauvin

New York, NY, June 25, 2021 … ADL (Anti-Defamation League) CEO Jonathan A. Greenblatt issued the following statement today regarding the sentencing of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin to 22 years in state prison for the murder of George Floyd:

“Today’s sentencing of former police officer Derek Chauvin does not change the fact that George Floyd should still be alive today.  It doesn’t change the fact that Daunte Wright, Breonna Taylor, Adam Toledo, and too many other innocent victims of police violence should still be alive today.

"However, today represents a step forward towards ensuring that law enforcement officers who commit acts of violence, the likes of which we all horrifyingly witnessed when Derek Chauvin pressed his knee down on George Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes, will be held accountable.

"We renew our calls for our country to tackle systemic racism, reimagine what public safety looks like, and create transformational change to ensure justice and fair treatment for all people."
