Dallas, TX, December 11, 2018 … ADL today urged the Republican Party of Texas to denounce and remove Ray Myers, who recently proclaimed himself a white nationalist, from his position as a Texas Republican Party Platform Committee member, and any other leadership position.

In a recent Facebook post, Ray Myers wrote, “I’m a WHITE NATIONALIST and very Proud of it.”  Mr. Myers later attempted to clarify his post by stating, “I am Anglo and I’m very proud of it, just like black people and brown people are proud of their race. I am a patriot. I am very proud of my country … And white nationalist, all that means is America first. That’s exactly what that means. … I mean, just like Black Lives Matter, white lives matter, too … We’re all in the same melting pot. Now why can’t we say, as Anglos, that we’re proud?”

White nationalism is a term that originated among white supremacists as a euphemism for white supremacy. The implications of Mr. Myers’ statements appear to be that America is a white nation and patriotism is synonymous with white nationalism.

In a letter sent to Texas GOP Chairman James Dickey by the three Texas regional offices, ADL emphasized that “the post and comments are reason alone for removal of Mr. Myers from any leadership position with the Texas GOP.”  However, Myers also “has a record of engaging in similar conduct,” and “thus, this recent behavior cannot be explained away as a mere anomaly in character.” The letter stressed that “In light of Mr. Myers’ membership on the permanent platform committee which helps shape legislative priorities and core values for the Republican Party of Texas, his conduct should be deeply disturbing and alarming for the Texas GOP.”

The letter calls on the Texas GOP to live up to the statement in the party platform’s preamble that “… we still hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal …” by unequivocally condemning Mr. Myers’ most recent comments and immediately removing him from any leadership position.
