Initiative Will Collect Fresh Ideas to Combat Evolving Technology Challenges

New York, NY, March 8, 2018 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL)’s Center for Technology and Society (CTS) is expanding its work with a new fellowship program that will amplify the work of cutting-edge researchers and practitioners at the intersection of tech and civil rights.

The new Belfer Fellowship program is the newest initiative from CTS, which ADL opened last year to bring a new focus to ensuring justice and fair treatment for all in the digital age.

The program was made possible by a generous contribution from the Robert A. and Renee E. Belfer Family Foundation, the same family that has been a longtime supporter of Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

“In this rapidly evolving climate, we must strengthen our ability to take on challenges by bringing in fresh perspectives,” said Brittan Heller, director of CTS. “I am excited to engage with the ideas these fellows will bring, and to use their experience in the tech community, academia, and media to generate new knowledge and solutions.”

Belfer Fellows will conduct research and develop strategies to promote cyberhate awareness and digital citizenship, and leverage projects for wider social good. They will propose projects to influence public policy to promote the positive role emerging technologies can play, and they will have opportunities to be part of coalition-based advocacy and programming.

Fellows may also write about and contribute to priority CTS projects, such us ongoing work on artificial intelligence and understanding hate speech online (the Online Hate Index), using data science and data visualization to help the public understand hate crimes, building a virtual reality experience to increase empathy and awareness of bias, as well as new approaches and tools to empower users to flag hateful content online.
