ADL to Co-Host ‘Being an Ally Game Jam’ in Multiple Cities Across U.S.

NEW YORK – October 16, 2017 … With America as divided as ever and more people being targeted by bias, bullying and hatred online and off-line, the Anti-Defamation League and The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment are hosting a hackathon where video game developers will work together to explore what it means to be an ally and build video games that help counter the hate and bias we’ve seen surge in the past year.

At ADL, the effort is being led by its cyber-focused Center on Technology and Society.

The “Being an Ally Game Jam” will be held at ADL’s New York office from 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 21 until 7 p.m. on October 22. The hackathon will also be held at other locations across the U.S., including Austin, Texas, and Oakland, Calif.

During the Jam, developers will find creative ways to incorporate ADL’s six ways to be an ally into video games to illustrate how to be an ally to targeted communities. ADL experts will review the games based on how the six ways are included, as well as creativity and playability. The winning team will receive a $2,500 prize, membership in the International Game Developers Association, and be featured at ADL’s Never is Now! summit in San Francisco on November 13. The team will also be awarded a Nintendo Switch or SNES Mini.

Developers are encouraged to register online now, form teams and start building their games in advance of the event. Resources on “Being an Ally” are available at adl.org.

Helping to promote the effort are partner organizations Game Jolt, Playcrafters, Games for Change, and the International Game Developers Association.

Media are invited to attend this event in person.
