Your voice matters. ADL thanks its volunteers who urged the Senate to confirm a U.S. Ambassador to Israel. In the days following the Hamas attack, ADL ramped up advocacy efforts to the Senate, prioritizing the confirmation of an ambassador to Israel and highlighting the need for that critical position to be filled during this moment of crisis. We engaged thousands of supporters to contact their senators to urge an immediate confirmation. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee scheduled a hearing, during which the Lew nomination was advanced, and a swift floor vote was then scheduled. ADL's volunteers continued to urge confirmation, and on Tuesday, Jack Lew was confirmed as the new U.S. ambassador to Israel.

Learn more about ways you can take action with ADL and read statements from U.S. government and civil society leaders expressing solidarity with Israel, condemning the terrorist attack and supporting Israel’s right to self-defense.

Take Action

1. Urge Congress to Pass Emergency Security Funding for Houses of Worship. Anger over the Israel-Hamas conflict can seep into American society in the form of antisemitic harassment, assault, and vandalism. Join ADL in urging Congress to pass emergency funding for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program.

2. Urge your Senators to Support Israel. Call on them to back the President's funding request for Israel which includes emergency supplemental funding for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program. We need to fight the surge of antisemitism and show solidarity with Israel and the Jewish community.

3. Demand that the UN and International Committee of the Red Cross work to release the hostages now!

4. Thank your Members of Congress who support Israel and the Jewish Community.

5. Help protect houses of worship from hate. Call your Members of Congress and urge them to support emergency funding.

6. Tell Your Senators to call for the immediate release of all hostages in Gaza. Join ADL in urging your Senators to support a resolution demanding Hamas immediately release all hostages.

7. Urge your U.S. Representative to become a cosponsor of the STOP HATE Act

8. Support Jewish students on college campuses. Find the university with which you are affiliated and email the administration to urge them to take action to protect the safety and wellbeing of Jewish students on campus.

9. Urge the U.S. Department of Education to make colleges safe from antisemitism. The Senate Resolution Condemning Antisemitism on Campuses passed but we still need your help to make colleges and universities safer from antisemitism.

10. Tell the media to do better in coverage of the crisis in Israel. They must call Hamas the terrorist organization they are and refuse to simply accept claims from Hamas and terrorist groups spokespeople as credible.

11. Urge social media platforms to follow better content moderation practices related to the crisis in Israel. In the wake of the Oct. 7th terrorist attacks on Israel, ADL is monitoring a surge of antisemitism, anti-Muslim hate, fake news, and propaganda being spread on social media. Social media companies must act to ensure they are not fanning the flames of hate.

12. Report antisemitic incidents on campus. Antisemitism has no place on campus. By sharing incidents with us, we are able to provide support, identify patterns and trends, and ensure campuses do better. We are all part of the fight against antisemitism.

13. Support Israel through organizations providing humanitarian support. Below is a list of a few of the groups working on the ground in Israel and abroad that are providing essential humanitarian support.

14. Donate to support ADL’s work in the U.S. and abroad. ADL personnel in the U.S. and Israel have been engaged around-the-clock since the crisis began Saturday morning, Israel time, ever vigilant of potential repercussions during and after Israel’s retaliatory counteroffensive.

Statements

There have been heartening demonstrations of support for Israel from around the world. We have seen administration officials, elected leaders, civil society partners and others expressing solidarity with Israel, condemning the terrorist attack and supporting Israel’s right to self-defense. We are sharing some of them below, and will be continuously updating this list.

Executive Branch

President Macron of France, Chancellor Scholz of Germany, Prime Minister Meloni of Italy, Prime Minister Sunak of the United Kingdom, and President Biden of the United States
Today, we — President Macron of France, Chancellor Scholz of Germany, Prime Minister Meloni of Italy, Prime Minister Sunak of the United Kingdom, and President Biden of the United States — express our steadfast and united support to the State of Israel, and our unequivocal condemnation of Hamas and its appalling acts of terrorism.

We make clear that the terrorist actions of Hamas have no justification, no legitimacy, and must be universally condemned. There is never any justification for terrorism. In recent days, the world has watched in horror as Hamas terrorists massacred families in their homes, slaughtered over 200 young people enjoying a music festival, and kidnapped elderly women, children, and entire families, who are now being held as hostages.

Our countries will support Israel in its efforts to defend itself and its people against such atrocities. We further emphasize that this is not a moment for any party hostile to Israel to exploit these attacks to seek advantage.

All of us recognize the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people, and support equal measures of justice and freedom for Israelis and Palestinians alike. But make no mistake: Hamas does not represent those aspirations, and it offers nothing for the Palestinian people other than more terror and bloodshed.

Over the coming days, we will remain united and coordinated, together as allies, and as common friends of Israel, to ensure Israel is able to defend itself, and to ultimately set the conditions for a peaceful and integrated Middle East region. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism Deborah Lipstadt
Yesterday’s heinous, barbaric terrorism against Israeli civilians is the most lethal assault against Jews since the Holocaust. There is no justification whatsoever for this mass murder. None. No one has the right to tell Israel how to defend itself and prevent and deter future attacks. As @POTUS stated, “The United States stands with Israel. We will not ever fail to have their back… Israel has the right to defend itself and its people. Full stop.” (Tweet: https://twitter.com/StateSEAS/status/1711204281083220439)

Congressional

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY)
The terrorist attacks by Hamas on the people of Israel are absolutely horrific. The U.S. stands with Israel in its unwavering right to defend itself. I stand ready to ensure Israel has the support to do so. My prayers are with the dead, reported hostages, and hundreds injured. (Tweet)

Senate Minority Leader McConnell (R-KY)
Today’s terrorist violence against Israel is a reminder of the evil that motivates Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and their patrons in Tehran. The United States and the civilized world must stand in solidarity as a fellow democracy defends its sovereignty and its citizens against vicious attacks. My full statement (Tweet)

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair Ben Cardin (D-MD)
I condemn the brazen and ongoing terrorist attack that has killed innocent Israeli citizens across southern Israel today. I mourn those lost and my heart goes out to their families. May their memory be for a blessing. Just as the US stood by #Israel after it was attacked exactly 50 years ago on Yom Kippur, today we stand by Israel in this time of crisis.  As SFRC Chair, I am committed to ensuring that Israel has what it needs to defend itself and its citizens, today and every day. @SFRCdems (Tweet thread)

Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV)
"I unequivocally condemn Hamas’s violent and unprovoked terrorist attacks. Israel has the right to defend itself and respond to the brutal murder and kidnapping of its citizens. The United States and the American people stand with Israel."

Sen. James Lankford (R-OK)
The US should stand strong with our ally Israel as they defend themselves after a full scale terrorist attack and multiple kidnappings from Gaza. I am praying for peace & safety for our friends. (https://twitter.com/SenatorLankford/status/1710679807803994508)

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)
"U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) today made this statement following Hamas’ unjust invasion and attack on Israel."

“Our thoughts and prayers are with our friends and allies in Israel as they defend their homeland from this unjust invasion and attack by the terrorist group Hamas.

“It would serve Israel and the world well to respond to this outrage by launching an operation that will destroy the Hamas organization – not just contain it.

“I am convinced that this unprecedented and brutal attack by Hamas is not only supported by Iran, it was designed to stop peace efforts between Saudi Arabia and Israel. A peace agreement between those two nations would be a nightmare for Iran and Hamas.

“Israel has lived long enough in the shadow of the Hamas terrorist organization. Israel has always been pressed by the international community to make a proportional response to any attacks and the world was ready to condemn any Israeli excesses in defending their citizens and homeland. That kind of thinking and criticism needs to come to an end."

“We should support Israel’s ability to eradicate this terrorist threat by any and all means necessary.” (https://www.lgraham.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=52F9D091-A3A0-4A34-826E-8167538A8632)"

We stand with Israel and our hearts go out to the families and communities affected by the senseless acts of terrorism and hope to see a swift and safe return of those held hostage. The bond between the United States and Israel is, and will always be, ironclad."

“Additionally, while we have no indication of specific domestic anti-Semitic threats related to the recent terrorist attacks in Israel, if the past is a guide for the future, the coming days could be a precarious time for the American Jewish community. We call on the U.S. Government, particularly its law enforcement agencies, to take swift concrete steps to protect our communities.” https://nikemawilliams.house.gov/posts/co-chairs-of-the-bipartisan-congressional-caucus-on-black-jewish-relations-statement-on-terrorist-attacks-in-israel

House Bipartisan Task Force for Combatting Antisemitism

"Today, U.S. Representatives Kathy Manning (D-NC), Chris Smith (R-NJ), Marc Veasey (D-TX), Kay Granger (R-TX), Ted Lieu (D-CA), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Grace Meng (D-NY), and Randy Weber (R-TX), all eight Co-Chairs of the House Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Antisemitism, released the following statement condemning Hamas’ attack on Israel and antisemitism:

“As Co-Chairs of the House Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Antisemitism, we are horrified by Hamas’ brutal terrorist attacks and massacre of civilians in Israel — Saturday was the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust. We unequivocally condemn Hamas and stand strong with our ally Israel.

“We also reject dehumanizing rhetoric, false equivalencies, and double standards targeting the Israeli people and the Jewish state. Tragically, when Israel is under attack, we witness a major increase in antisemitism and hate-filled violence against Jews around the world, and we have already seen an increase online. That is why we must remain vigilant towards any threats to the safety and security of the Jewish community in the days to come. Standing with our ally Israel, we reaffirm our commitment to countering terrorism, antisemitism, and all forms of hate.” https://manning.house.gov/media/press-releases/house-bipartisan-task-force-combating-antisemitism-co-chairs-condemn-hamas"

House Democratic Jewish members

"We are united in standing with and supporting our ally Israel as it responds to terrorist attacks from Gaza. Hamas has declared war on Israel and her people. Our alliance with Israel is unbreakable; our commitment to Israel’s security is ironclad. We extend our condolences to the families of all those killed, our hopes for recovery for the many hundreds wounded, and pray for the safe and immediate return of all hostages taken. We support Israel’s right to defend itself—to protect its people and communities—and will do all we can to ensure Israel has the ability and capacity to restore and maintain its security and the safety of all its citizens." (Statement)

Interparliamentary Task Force to Combat Online Antisemitism

"As leaders of the Interparliamentary Task Force to Combat Online Antisemitism, we express our deepest sympathies for the families and loves ones of the hundreds of innocent lives taken at the hands of the terrorist organization Hamas. We unequivocally stand with Israel and its people during this turbulent time.

During periods of escalating tensions, we remain keenly aware of social media’ potential to intensify conflicts, disseminate false information, and propagate prejudiced narratives, especially those steeped in antisemitism and conspiracy beliefs.

We call on social media companies to increase resources and employ appropriate measures to ensure their platforms are not fueling tensions and amplifying false or misleading information.

We know that while antisemitism and hate may start online, this can jump quickly from screens into devastating real-world acts of hate. At a time when the Jewish community is under attack, in Israel and beyond, it is incumbent upon tech platforms to monitor address relevant content to ensure antisemitic videos, messages, and graphics, as well as misinformation, disinformation and false content about the evolving situation in Israel are not enabled to inspire acts of hate against the Jewish community around the world.

Antisemitism both online and in person, will continue to spread if left unaddressed. As we’ve seen recently, the failure to effectively address this hatred on platforms today could undoubtedly lead to hate-fueled attacks tomorrow.

We call on all social media companies - and indeed all tech platforms - to take appropriate action to prioritize safety and curtail dangerous content in the shadow of Hamas’ brazen terror attacks on the Jewish people. (https://twitter.com/RepDWStweets/status/1712483220132954380)"

State and Local Officials

Attorney General Alliance and National Association of Attorneys General
The Attorney General Alliance (AGA) and the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) have joined forces to extend their heartfelt support and solidarity to the State of Israel and its people during these challenging times. The two organizations have issued a joint statement, echoing their commitment to peace, security, and the protection of innocent lives. In response to a request from the Israeli Embassy, AGA and NAAG have asked state attorneys general across the United States to stand in solidarity with Israel as it faces an invasion by Hamas, which has resulted in tragic losses of Israeli lives and the taking of innocent Israeli citizens as hostages. The Israeli Embassy has suggested a powerful and visible way to demonstrate this support: illuminating Capitol buildings in Blue and White, the colors of the Israeli flag. This symbolic gesture serves as a symbol of the enduring bond between the United States and Israel, rooted in shared values of democracy, human rights, and a commitment to peace. AGA and NAAG recognize the importance of international cooperation and mutual support during challenging times. The relationship between the United States and Israel is a testament to these values, and we believe it is vital to rearm and strengthen this bond during moments of adversity. We extend the request to state attorneys general to join us in demonstrating solidarity with Israel and its people by participating in this symbolic gesture. Together, we hope to provide comfort and encouragement to those affected by the current situation, and to emphasize our collective commitment to peace, stability, and justice in the region. We have a long history of fighting bigotry, racism, and extremism, and we will continue to stand with Israel to support them against these acts of terrorism.

Organizers of 60th Anniversary of March on Washington Stand in Solidarity Against Hatred and War

New York, NY –– The nation’s leading Civil Rights organizations issued the following statement on the deadly terrorist attack against Israel over the weekend. The organizations stood in solidarity with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), one of the main organizers of the 60th Anniversary March on Washington this summer, which condemned the violent attacks.

The following statement can be attributed to Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN); Martin Luther King, III, Chairman, and Arndrea Waters King, President of the Drum Major Institute (DMI); Marc Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League (NUL); Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP; Melanie Campbell, President and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) and Convener of the Black Women’s Roundtable; Shavon Arline-Bradley, President and CEO of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW); and Janet Murguía, President and CEO of UnidosUS:

“Today we are again witnessing the horrifying effects of violence upon innocent civilians in the Middle East. We condemn this terrorist attack on Israel in which civilians have been targeted, killed, and kidnapped. The long thread of Middle East history reaffirms that the region remains an unsettled boiling point. We again reaffirm our commitments to one another and the certainty that throughout the world, our safety and futures are intertwined. We hold innocent civilians’ families and our partners in our hearts, sharing prayers for their safety. We call on all our partners and colleagues to join us in solidarity because hatred and war must end.”

Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King
We are saddened by the horrific violence that unfolded in Israel today.  We pray for peace and for the families of the victims of this devastating violence.  We hope and pray that this atrocity will not result in more death and destruction and that peace-loving people in Israel, Gaza, and throughout the region will remail nonviolent and call on their leaders to negotiate a just and lasting peace in which the diverse peoples of the Middle East can live together with greater mutual understanding, cooperation, and goodwill.

The Asian American Foundation
We condemn the deadly attacks today in Israel and stand in solidarity with the @ADL and our allies in the Jewish community. We mourn the lives lost and express our condolences to those impacted by this tragedy. Hate is not the answer.

United Negro College Fund
Dr. Michael L. Lomax:
“As President of UNCF (United Negro College Fund), I condemn the recent attacks by Hamas terrorists on innocent Israeli civilians. UNCF is an organization dedicated to promoting education, equality and unity, and we firmly believe that violence and hatred are obstacles to progress and must be rejected. The vicious antisemitism that fueled this terrible attack should have no place in America, the Middle East or anywhere else in the world.
“Additionally, we know that Hamas is a terror organization whose values and actions are not representative of the Palestinian people. We mourn all innocent lives lost in response to this terror.
“All of us at UNCF stand committed to working across divides and with those equally dedicated to achieving peace. In today's world, where international events carry domestic ramifications, we know that our voice carries across borders and oceans. As a community, we call for solidarity where there is divisiveness, peace where there is war, and love where there is hate.”

"Today the terrorists that have been waging war on the people of Iran and the region for four decades have once again taken their brutal war to Israel.

Iranian-Americans stand against today’s brutal terrorist attack and stand in solidarity with our Israeli, Iranian-Israeli, and Jewish Iranian-American friends.

Appeasement of the Islamic Republic by the United States not only allows but incentivizes such terrorism. This terror against innocent civilians will only end when the brutal rule of the Islamic Republic which funds and directs this terrorism is ended."

Committee of 100
"Committee of 100, a non-profit organization of prominent Chinese Americans, today released the following statement on the violence and terrorism taking place in the Middle East currently:

“We mourn the innocent lives lost in the Israel, Palestine and the Gaza Strip conflict and stand in solidarity with our Jewish brothers and sisters. The images and words flashed across the world prompt horror, sadness and anger. When children, the elderly and other innocent civilians are caught in unprovoked, violent attacks, we must unite to condemn the violence and call out the terrorism by Hamas for what it is. Our hearts go out to the innocent people who are caught in the midst of this turmoil, facing the devastating and profound impact on their families and communities. Hate has no place in our society.”

Charlotte Clymer
There is zero justification for these terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians. It is such a cowardly, disgusting, and self-serving move by Hamas. They do not care about the innocent Palestinian people they claim to be defending, let alone human rights generally.

National Black Empowerment Council
"Dear Israeli and Jewish friends, In these unprecedented times, we, at NBEC, want to express our unwavering solidarity with you. We understand the pain and fear that comes from the barbarous acts of violence and hate.  We stand in unity with you in the strongest condemnation possible of the evil actions of Hamas.  Just as you have fought with Black leaders for justice and equality, we will stand with you to see that Jewish people the world over live in peace and security. We mourn the innocent lives lost and have the mettle necessary to be with you and the Israeli people for as long as it takes to eradicate the threat of Hamas.  Let us continue to work together towards a world where all people can thrive without the threat of extremist violence and hatred. National Sheriffs' Association
The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) today denounced in the strongest of terms the inhumane, criminal and unprovoked attack against the people and institutions of Israel by the terror group Hamas. Also, NSA is calling for a day of vigilance and honor on Friday October 13, 2023.

Casualty reports from Israel demonstrate once again the men and women of law enforcement bore the brunt of the initial attacks from the Hamas attacks in southern-Israel. The police officers carried an imaginable burden responding to an overwhelming force of heavily armed terrorists sworn to kill, torture and kidnap innocent civilians – including children.

“Cowardly terror groups are calling on support of the Hamas by using Friday October 13 as a day of rage and uprising, it is nothing more than overt threat to encourage and foment hatred,” explained Sheriff Greg Champagne, president of the National Sheriffs’ Association.”

“Once again, we saw the evil face of terror and its reviled intentions. Every Sheriff and the NSA rejects this in no uncertain terms. Instead, we encourage law enforcement of the United States to use tomorrow as a day to stand with law enforcement and against terror of all kinds. Tomorrow, October 13, 2023, should be a day of vigilance, and a nationwide day of honor for those sworn to uphold the law. For those that have a ‘thin-blue-line’ patch, sticker, or insignia we encourage you to wear it tomorrow in honor of those who died protecting Israel and their communities.”

NSA joins in the universal call for civilized nations to stand in honor with these brave officers. It calls upon its members to collaborate with their peers in law enforcement and join together in prayer and promote civil actions of support for the families of the fallen officers of the Israel Police.

The NSA honors and recognizes the bravery and heroism of those members of law enforcement, and the innocent civilians who died in the Hamas attacks against Israel.
